Friday, college football analyst Danny Kanell, via his podcast Off The Bench, let fans know which four teams he’s picking to meet in the College Football Playoff this year. The big surprise – which isn’t a surprise at all if you follow Kanell – is that Alabama isn’t in his field. Auburn is the lone SEC team – coming in at No. 2. It’s actually somewhat surprising to see Kanell put any SEC teams in the field.Kanell explained his picks – he thinks Clemson will be the overall 1-seed. He also likes Ohio State and USC to make the field. Here’s what he had to say:“(On Alabama and Auburn getting in) I actually think there’s a pretty good chance that could happen the way their schedules play out. We’ve seen the committee is not afraid to put in two teams from the SEC. I think that could happen.I think there’s a pretty good chance we could see two teams from the Big Ten get in the final Playoff but I couldn’t do it on my own.I went Clemson, now this has a caveat – I’m assuming this is Trevor Lawrence playing quarterback. I think Kelly Bryant starts the season, but at some point, if the transition is made, I think that’s what propels Clemson to the title.…I think Auburn is going to have a big year with Jarrett Stidham, a sneaky Heisman pick – you can actually find some pretty good value there. The Ohio State pick, I think all of this distraction could possibly galvanize the team. I don’t think it’s going to impact them that much not having Urban Meyer those first three weeks. You’ve got to remember, he also is able to participate in practice after that first week. He’s still going to game plan. They’ve got a ton of offensive coaches and head coaches on that staff where I don’t think it impacts them too much.”Here’s the segment, if you’re interested in listening:Obligatory college football playoff picks that you’re not obliged to watch but would be nice if you did…Watch Off the Bench daily: https://t.co/K5l65dx385Download/subscribe to the pod: https://t.co/v84Wj5Bsj9 pic.twitter.com/Y1JUVf8ibv— Danny Kanell (@dannykanell) August 31, 2018Auburn’s, Kanell’s SEC pick, will likely have to get past Washington this weekend to have a legitimate shot.
