3 Chevrolet CorvetteMoving up from the 10th-place slot last year is the 2019 Chevrolet Corvette. While we’ve all been ogling the new mid-engine Corvette, it’s easy to forget what a performance bargain the current-generation ‘Vette is. From the base trim to the Grand Sport to the bonkers ZR1, the Corvette is an American icon.My preference is for the Grand Sport, which strikes a perfect balance between everyday drivability and canyon-carving performance. The 6.2-liter V8 puts out 460 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque. You can get it with a seven-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission, but the kicker is the borrowed chassis and aero parts from the beefier Z06. Like I said, perfect balance. The Corvette is made in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Honda RidgelineAgain keeping the status quo, the Honda Ridgeline maintains third place on the American Made Index. This crossover-that-looks-like-a-truck provides a better ride than a traditional pickup and gets an awesome lockable trunk right in the floor of the bed. And it doesn’t do the truck stuff too badly, either, as it’s able to carry 1,860 pounds of payload and tow 3,500 pounds. The Ridgeline is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 good for 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. That is channeled through a six-speed automatic transmission with available all-wheel drive. It’s built in Lincoln, Alabama. 10 Photos More From Roadshow 52 Photos Share your voice Acura RDXThe third-generation Acura RDX squeaks into the top ten list with larger proportions, plenty of interior space and better handling than its predecessor. Like its MDX counterpart, the RDX is available with the A-Spec styling package. The RDX sports a 2.0-liter, turbocharged, four-cylinder engine. Jeep With high trade tensions looming and increasing talk of tariffs, more and more consumers are looking to buy American. Cars.com has released its annual American Made Index, showcasing companies that use the most American-sourced parts and labor in their vehicles. The results may surprise you.Cars.com analyzed more than 100 US-built vehicles for five key data points: manufacturing location, parts sourcing, US employment, engine sourcing and transmission sourcing. You might think something like the Ford F-150 would top the list, but it drops from its No. 5 spot for 2018 and out of the top 10 completely. Even the first-place holder, the Jeep Cherokee, is a pretty global product. It’s a Jeep, sure, but that brand is part of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, an Italian-owned business.Cars.com surveyed 1,000 people and found that half are concerned about automotive import tariffs, with 41% saying they are unsure if tariffs would make them more likely to buy American. Either way, we’re big fans of all the vehicles on this list. These days, buying American doesn’t necessarily mean sticking with a US-based automaker. Mullen Lowe With a couple of notable exceptions like the NSX and the last RSX, Acura has been living quite solidly at the dull end of the automotive spectrum for the past couple of decades. That started to look like it might change when the brand released the beautiful and aggressive Precision concept back in 2016.Unfortunately, the Precision concept didn’t herald any significant immediate changes, but now the rumor is that Acura is preparing to launch a new concept during this year’s Monterey Car Week that will be nearly production ready and would be a look at a soon-to-come flagship sedan, according to a report by Car & Driver published on Thursday. This new flagship concept would bear some resemblance to the long, low, sleek and suicide door-sporting Precision concept — and in our opinion, that would go a long way toward curing Acura’s lack of excitement. That would be doubly true if it threw the excellent turbo four-cylinder engine from the Civic Type R under the hood, though we wouldn’t hold our breath for that. Also included in Car & Driver’s article were hints that we might even be able to expect the second generation of Acura’s ZDX crossover coupe thing which originally ended production in 2013. Clearly, that car was ahead of its time, as has been proven by the plague of other coupe-overs to hit the market in the last year.Acura execs are allegedly looking at early designs for a new ZDX, and if that goes well, we’d expect to see one in the next few years.Acura representatives declined to comment on future products. 2010 Acura ZDX 71 Photos 2020 Cadillac XT6 first drive: Sometimes ‘more’ is more 49 Photos
Mentioned Above Apple iPod Touch 2015 (16GB – blue) 23 Photos • Apple Arcade Later this year Apple will launch Apple Arcade, a subscription-based games service where you pay a monthly fee to play iOS games made by some of the world’s top game developers. The most exciting for me include Annapurna Interactive, makers of Donut County, and Mistwalker, headed by Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi.Apple expects to have 100 exclusive and nonexclusive games lined up for the service at launch, with more coming later. You’ll sign up for the service and then download any Apple Arcade game you wish at no additional cost. Apple Arcade, on Mac, iPad and iPhone. Apple The best thing about this service for owners of the iPod Touch, which has no cellular connection, only Wi-Fi, is that every game will be playable offline. That means you can play your games to your heart’s content even if you’re on the train or in the back seat of a carpool vehicle. A subscription will cost the same for individuals or a family of six and will be compatible across iPad, iPhone and Apple TV. iOS 13 I haven’t been this excited about an iOS update since iOS 7. That’s when Apple implemented the “flat” look of app icons. With iOS 13 it’s dark mode that has me the most giddy. Honestly, what grabbed my attention was simply the fact that dark mode will be a purposefully designed feature — not just an inverting of the colors — that just looks cool in screenshots. Dark mode is coming. Screenshot by David Carnoy/CNET Also, iOS 13 will also bring a newly designed camera interface and editing options, as well as Sign In with Apple. Sign In lets users log in to apps and sites on their iPod Touch using their AppleID instead of their email address, which Apple says will prevent them from being tracked online and relentlessly targeted with ads. AR gets more real The iPod Touch will work with AR apps in the App Store. That includes the iOS app Measure, which lets you virtually measure things in the real world by giving you a really flexible digital ruler. With Pokemon Go or the upcoming and highly anticipated Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, AR is kind of becoming a thing. And though I wasn’t excited about it initially, the more useful apps I find, like Measure, the more I’m becoming a believer. Practical AR is the best AR. Jason Cipriani/CNET To be sure, you’ll need a more powerful device to take advantage of some of the high-end AR apps, but for simple measuring, and for finding Pokemon, the new iPod Touch can handle it. Bonus: It has a headphone jack Yep, you can use Bluetooth headphones, or plug your wired ‘phones into that 3.5mm jack on the bottom edge, just like we used to do back in the day. That either appeals to you or not, so I’ll say no more about it. Do it! Or don’t. I mean, the Touch isn’t for everyone. But it’s cheap enough and offers enough current features, as well as some smart strategic future-proofing, to be worth your money if you decide to take the plunge. Sarah Tew/CNET Apple released a new iPod Touch for 2019 a couple months back. It costs $200 and has a small, low-resolution screen. If you already own an iPhone past the iPhone 5, there’s no reason to even consider buying the iPod Touch. Probably the same deal if you own a recent iPad. If, however, you’ve never owned an iOS device or have in the past and want back in, at $200 the iPod Touch is now the cheapest iOS entry point. But it’s not your only $200 option. Nintendo this week announced a new scaled down version of its Nintendo Switch, called the Switch Lite. The $200 gaming system is smaller than the original Switch and can’t connect to a TV. So how does the Switch Lite compare to the iPod Touch? In his review of the iPod Touch 2019, my colleague Patrick Holland very clearly lays out why, despite its appeal to certain consumers, most will want to skip the iPod Touch. And while I can totally understand and agree with many of his points, ultimately I see it differently. I’ve been a stubborn supporter of iOS, and more specifically the Apple App Store, for nearly 11 years, since I bought the iPhone 3G in 2008. There are two simple reasons for that: I like the interface and its evolution, and the game and app selection in the App Store has never disappointed me. That’s really it. I have an iPhone XS Max and absolutely have no need for the iPod Touch, but I’m excited for those of you who do. And here are three reasons I think the iPod Touch is a near steal at $200. (Representational image)CCO Public domainA 30-year-old Indian student was shot dead in Alabama, United States, on July 24. The victim, identified as Neil Kumar, was working part-time at a gas station convenience store on Highway 10. Visuals from three CCTV cameras in the store show the assailant, dressed in black and face covered, pointing the gun at Neil. One of the videos shows the assailant lurking in the parking lot for a while around 5:55 AM, five minutes before the store opened. In another CCTV footage that shows the entrance of the shop from the inside, the assailant is seen entering the store, pointing his gun at Kumar and robbing the store. The time stamp on the videos revealed that the assailant was in the store for less than a minute. Although the videos do not show any struggle, Kumar was killed almost immediately. Reports state that the arrested suspect has a criminal background. The murder shocked Brundidge with the sheriff telling the media, “It’s been many, many, many years since Brundidge had a robbery/homicide.”Kumar was based in Kerala’s Thrissur. He had gone to the US to pursue his Master’s in Computer Science at the University of Troy in Brundidge, reported The News minute. He had been studying in the US for a year. His parents Purushothaman Kumar and Seema and his sisters Neema and Natasha flew to Alabama for Neil’s funeral.
The U.S. announced that it would be reviewing India’s eligibility for the GSP last year, but decided that it would withdraw the benefits in June 2019.Days after America imposed 25 percent tariff on steel and a 10 percent import duty on aluminium products, under its Generalised System of Preference, India has imposed retaliatory tariffs on 29 products imported from the United States, effective June 16.Though the tariffs will place a burden of $220-290 million on the United States, America’s imposition of tariff on Indian products will have a revenue implication of about $240 million on our steel and aluminium products. The Modi-led BJP government had initially decided to impose these duties on June 28 last year but the deadline was extended multiple times in the hopes of a solution emerging through negotiations on a proposed trade package. The US announced that it would be reviewing India’s eligibility for the GSP last year, but decided that it would withdraw the benefits in June 2019.In retaliation to the move, India has notified higher tariffs on several goods, including a hike of import duty from 30 percent to 120 percent on walnut, and 70 percent on masur dal. The duty on lentils will be increased to 40 percent, and on boric acid and binders for foundry moulds to 7.5 percent. The other products on which duties will be hiked include certain kind of nuts, iron and steel products, apples, pears, flat-rolled products of stainless steel, other alloy steel, tube and pipe fittings, and screws, bolts and rivets. The Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said last week that India accepts the decision of the US to withdraw GSP benefits to its exporters “gracefully”, and will continue to work towards making the exports competitive.India’s move comes in the light of a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Japan, on June 28-29.Meanwhile, US secretary of state Mike Pompeo is also scheduled to visit New Delhi on June 25-26, on his way to the G20 Summit, to hold bilateral discussions with his Indian counterpart and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.
(PhysOrg.com) — While the rest of the world gets on with meeting the New Year head on, two research scientists from New Zealand are traveling to the Antarctic to take measurements of the magnet South Pole. Such periodic measurements are necessary geo-scientists say, because the magnetic poles keep moving around. The south magnetic pole, for example is slowly moving north toward Australia at almost ten miles per year; this matters because very accurate ground measurements are necessary to keep satellites properly calibrated, ensuring such things as GPS coordinates are accurate. The magnetic poles move, as do other parts of the Earth’s surface, because the outer core inside the planet is made of molten metal. As the Earth moves through space, spinning and circling the sun, there is some jostling that goes on, resulting in some shifting. And unfortunately, it doesn’t do so in a regular predictable fashion, which means changes to the surface of the Earth must be constantly monitored all over the planet. For reasons that aren’t exactly clear, New Zealand has been charged with monitoring the south magnetic pole, and has been doing so by traveling there every five years since the 1950’s.This latest expedition, made up of just two guys, Stewart Bennie and Tony Hurst, will travel first to a particularly barren locale known as Lake Vanda in one of Antarctica’s dry valley areas. After that, they will travel to a site near the shelter constructed and used by the infamous polar explorer Robert Scott and his team before they were lost trying to return home back in 1912-13 as part of the Terra-Nova Expedition. To take their measurements, the team will make note of physical landscape features, then will use a tool known as a magnetic theodolite to measure magnetic field angles relative to the ground. At the south magnetic pole, such fields should be 90 degrees relative to the horizon. They will also be using instruments that allow them to measure the strength of the magnetic field, which will be useful, because scientists have found that the magnetic fields have been diminishing over the past couple of hundred years, a sign perhaps that a “flip” is in the making over the next thousand years or so.To take into account the wobbling that occurs with magnetic fields, the two will take many such measurements over the course of a day to make sure that what they bring back to report, is truly accurate. © 2011 PhysOrg.com Explore further This document is subject to copyright. Over 35,000 people lost their lives in traffic accidents in 2015 (the last full year available), and more than 30,000 fatalities occur annually.Related: Is America Too ‘Safe’ for Innovation? Or Will Driverless Cars Ever Have Their Day? Prevention is is an area where businesses are active — with some working to create autonomous vehicles that eliminate human error altogether, and other, perhaps more practical, startups, striving to assist business owners, teens and other drivers to curb their driving mistakes, some of them fatal.Certainly, autonomous cars are nice, in theory, but a number of logistical and legal hurdles are preventing them from becoming a practical reality. Nor is their widespread adoption likely any time soon. But, what if a new app and technology could prevent up to 86 percent of traffic accidents altogether?Enter ITFT Innovative Technology for Transportation (ITFT) is a North Carolina-based company, currently in its crowdfunding stage, which has designed a Safe Driving System, (SDS) whose up-and-coming app and technology is designed to prevent speeding and reckless driving. The U.S. Department of Transportation has calculated that 94 percent of all traffic accidents are attributable to human error, so the Safe Driving System is designed to reduce those errors through controls and notifications that limit driver behavior.Compatible with any car manufactured since 1996, the Safe Driving System will be targeted primarily toward teenagers (and their reasonably worried parents). When the SDS is installed, parents will receive alerts whenever their teens drive over a designated speed threshold and when they make it to their destinations safely (or, less happily, when an accident has occurred).Related: Driverless Cars Won’t Make Roadways Perfectly SafeThe technology, however, also applies to businesses: It will be available to employers to keep track of their company vehicles and employee-drivers.Plus, individuals can use the SDS to gain a better awareness of their personal driving habits and to block distracting apps on their mobile devices (while they retain access to necessary phone and navigation functions).ITFT is further working on a “panic button,” designed for integration with ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft. If pressed, the panic button will simultaneously alert local authorities and force the vehicle to come to a stop, while recording video and audio of the scene. Then, the door will automatically unlock, allowing the passenger to exit safely. The button will be available for both drivers and passengers. The competitionITFT isn’t the first company developing technology designed to help drivers and prevent traffic accidents, but it is one of the only solutions capable of issuing both speed and reckless driving alerts. Zubie, for example, was designed as a GPS tracker for teenage drivers, but can’t alert parents when their teenagers are going over the speed limit.Instead, its technology is designed to send alerts when the car goes over a manually set speed. Hum, by Verizon, works similarly.Almost every solution now on the market will come with a monthly or yearly fee, usually in the neighborhood of $10 per month. The founderThe founder of ITFT, Matthew Godley, has said he was inspired to create the system after experiencing the deaths of community members in traffic accidents. Still relatively young, Godley, now 24, has assembled a team of engineers, innovators and advisors to help make his vision a reality.Start EngineCurrently, ITFT is listed on Start Engine, a crowdfunding website designed to help entrepreneurs meet their fundraising goals with the help of the general public. Until the offering deadline of April 2, 2017, investors can purchase up to 100,000 series B non-voting common shares of the company at a price of $10 per share. The future of accident prevention Chances are, the SDS is just the beginning of a new wave of technology aimed to help control traffic accidents in this country. Some companies are targeting the improvement of vehicles, with higher safety standards, automated elements, and in some cases, full autonomy. However, the other side of the equation is the driver: Until autonomous cars become reality, controlling driver behavior is the best tool available for limiting traffic accidents.Related: This Startup Aims to Make Sure Driverless Cars Don’t Run You OverThe more we learn about our own driving habits and the driving habits of our loved ones, the fewer risks we’ll face in our daily commutes and adventures.
