Shaqiri warned of hostile reception in Belgrade

first_imgLiverpool’s Xherdan Shaqiri has been warned to expect a hostile reception by Red Star Belgrade’s sporting director Zvezdan Terzic should he travel with his team to Serbia. The Merseyside club have been drawn in the same UEFA Champions League group with Red Star and Shaqiri could receive a hostile reception from the home fans following his controversial celebration at the World Cup.The Switzerland international featured in one of the most controversial moments of this year’s World Cup, when he celebrated his winning goal in Switzerland’s 2-1 triumph over Serbia by imitating the two-headed eagle in Albania’s flag, something team-mate Granit Xhaka also did earlier in the game.“I think Shaqiri will undergo extraordinary psychological pressure,” Terzic told daily Serbian publication Kurir, according to Goal.“He knows where he will be going. I know very well that our club is a symbol of Serbia, unlike Partizan Belgrade, who represent Yugoslavia more.“I do not know if he will be willing to play in Marakana [the nickname of Red Star’s Rajko Mitic Stadium] under these conditions, so I doubt he’ll come. If he comes, he’ll be smaller than a poppy seed.”Roberto Firmino, LiverpoolVirgil van Dijk praises Roberto Firmino after Liverpool’s win Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Virgil van Dijk hailed team-mate Roberto Firmino after coming off the bench to inspire Liverpool to a 3-1 comeback win against Newcastle United. But Terzic was sure to ease Liverpool’s worries with respect to security, adamant they will do their duty and protect Shaqiri.“We have to do everything we can to make Shaqiri feel like he can play football,” he added. “It is our duty to protect him. Let’s be good hosts.”While Xhaka apologised for his celebration this week, Shaqiri undermined the idea when asked if he would make amends.“Sure, I apologise if people felt attacked in Switzerland,” he said.“Somewhere, I don’t know, maybe in the mountains, where someone watched the game and it bothered him, I would certainly apologise.”last_img read more

State Outlines Plan to Provide Alternate Water Source for Mountain Home AFB

first_img Dan Cohen AUTHOR A state plan to deliver water from the Snake River to Mountain Home Air Force Base would ensure the installation in southwestern Idaho has a sustainable water supply in the event the aquifer it currently relies on dries up.Groundwater supplies in the Mountain Home area already are running low.“The risk that we face is that if the base doesn’t have a reliable water supply into the future, then it may risk the viability of retaining the base in the state of Idaho,” said Cynthia Bridge Clark, a water manager with the Idaho Department of Water Resources.Officials from the Idaho Department of Water Resources this week described the pipeline project, which is estimated to cost between $20 million and $30 million and could be in place in 2021, reported KBOI.In addition to the pipeline, which would range from 10 to 15 miles, the state would build a pump station and a water treatment facility to provide water for domestic, municipal, commercial and industrial uses. The state previously acquired the water rights to the surface water in CJ Strike Reservoir, which is located on the Snake River. The Air Force would pay the state back through a water purchase agreement, according to the story. State water managers next will begin the project’s design stage, which will take several years.last_img read more

Facebook mistakenly deleted Mark Zuckerbergs old posts

first_imgA 3D plastic representation of the Facebook logo is seen in this photo illustration May 13, 2015.Reuters file [Representational Image]In a bizarre incident, social networking giant Facebook has said that it “mistakenly deleted” CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s old posts, some of them dating back to 2007 and 2008.A spokesperson from the company reportedly said many of Zuckerberg’s old posts about Facebook can still be found on the company’s blog and in its newsroom.”A few years ago some of Mark’s posts were mistakenly deleted due to technical errors. The work required to restore them would have been extensive and not guaranteed to be successful so we didn’t do it,” CNET quoted a Facebook spokesperson as saying on Friday. The spokesperson added that they didn’t know how many total posts were deleted. The total number of vanished posts could be significantly higher, as the very nature of the issue makes it extremely difficult to make a full accounting of what exactly has gone missing over the years.”These disappearances, along with other changes Facebook has made to how it saves its archive of announcements and blog posts, make it much harder to parse the social network’s historical record.”This makes it far more difficult to hold the company, and Zuckerberg himself, accountable to past statements — particularly during a period of intense scrutiny of the company in the wake of a string of scandals,” the Business Insider said.last_img read more

Trade spat India imposes retaliatory tariff on 29 US items

first_imgThe U.S. announced that it would be reviewing India’s eligibility for the GSP last year, but decided that it would withdraw the benefits in June 2019.Days after America imposed 25 percent tariff on steel and a 10 percent import duty on aluminium products, under its Generalised System of Preference, India has imposed retaliatory tariffs on 29 products imported from the United States, effective June 16.Though the tariffs will place a burden of $220-290 million on the United States, America’s imposition of tariff on Indian products will have a revenue implication of about $240 million on our steel and aluminium products. The Modi-led BJP government had initially decided to impose these duties on June 28 last year but the deadline was extended multiple times in the hopes of a solution emerging through negotiations on a proposed trade package. The US announced that it would be reviewing India’s eligibility for the GSP last year, but decided that it would withdraw the benefits in June 2019.In retaliation to the move, India has notified higher tariffs on several goods, including a hike of import duty from 30 percent to 120 percent on walnut, and 70 percent on masur dal. The duty on lentils will be increased to 40 percent, and on boric acid and binders for foundry moulds to 7.5 percent. The other products on which duties will be hiked include certain kind of nuts, iron and steel products, apples, pears, flat-rolled products of stainless steel, other alloy steel, tube and pipe fittings, and screws, bolts and rivets. The Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said last week that India accepts the decision of the US to withdraw GSP benefits to its exporters “gracefully”, and will continue to work towards making the exports competitive.India’s move comes in the light of a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Japan, on June 28-29.Meanwhile, US secretary of state Mike Pompeo is also scheduled to visit New Delhi on June 25-26, on his way to the G20 Summit, to hold bilateral discussions with his Indian counterpart and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.last_img read more

Famed Vegas Casinos Could Be Hobbled As Thousands Of Workers Authorize Strike

first_imgBloomberg via Getty ImagesSome 50,000 hospitality workers could walk off the job as early as next month, potentially jeopardizing the Las Vegas tourist industry.Tourism helps keep the wheel of Las Vegas’ economy spinning, but a hitch could slow the spokes as tens of thousands of hospitality workers are preparing to strike as early as next month. The Culinary Workers Union, Nevada’s largest labor organization, voted Tuesday to authorize a citywide strike for 50,000 members once their contracts expire June 1 — if their demands are not met.About 25,000 members weighed in on the measure, with 99 percent approving a walkout, according to the union. The contracts cover some of the biggest players on the Las Vegas Strip — nearly three dozen casino resorts including Caesars Palace, Planet Hollywood and MGM Resorts International. The union says it is seeking guarantees “to provide (a) greater measure of security for members including workplace safety, sexual harassment, subcontracting, technology, and immigration.”Higher wages are also on the table, with the union arguing casinos are not adequately spreading profits among those who keep their facilities running. The union represents many of those who work in the front of the house as well as many of those who work behind the scenes including cooks, servers, porters and guest room attendants.Jose Licea, an on-call kitchen worker at Planet Hollywood Resort, has worked on the Strip for 25 years. He tells The Las Vegas Review-Journal that workers need to make more money to cover the rising cost of living.“Everything is going up: gas, food, supplies,” he says. “We need to raise salaries.”And in a city where a majority of the workforce works in the service sector, a growing reliance on automation has some worrying about their jobs being outsourced. The Review-Journal notes that employers on the Strip have already begun to use delivery robots and self check-ins — even drone-delivered-drinks are becoming a thing.Lewis Thomas, who works as a utility porter at the Tropicana Las Vegas, voted in favor of the strike. He tells the Review-Journal that he wants company-sponsored training to ensure that workers are not made redundant by the technological advances.“We are ready to walk if we don’t get the contract,” Thomas says. “Even if it means striking one month, two months or a year.”In 1984, thousands of casino and hotel workers launched a major strike lasting for more than two months and dealing a blow to the local economy, before new contracts were settled. Union members lost some $75 million in wages and benefits, reports The Associated Press, while Las Vegas lost a similar amount in tourism dollars. In the days ahead of the June 1 deadline, union negotiators and employers are working to avoid a similar outcome as they seek to solidify new five-year contracts.“A strike is a last resort,” Geoconda Argüello-Kline, secretary-treasurer for the union, said in a statement. “We want to come to an agreement.”MGM Resorts International told NPR in a statement that it has scheduled talks with the union this week and into next. The company says it is confident it can resolve the outstanding contract issues, “and will come to an agreement that works for all sides.”Copyright 2018 NPR.
