City council passes Buckeye boathouse

Columbus City Council unanimously passed the construction bid for Ohio State’s new boathouse Monday. The boathouse, which will cost the university more than $5 million, will be built on the west side of the Scioto River in Duranceaux Park and be capable of accommodating the rowing team. The OSU rowing team previously used a trailer as a changing room and piled their boats in an old steel shed. The rowers will now change and store their equipment in a state-of-the-art facility.Over the summer, the latest construction bid was passed by the Columbus Recreation and Parks Department Commission, and on Sept. 21, the council had its first reading of the bid, said Lynn Friedman, co-chair of Friends of Duranceaux Park. The project, which had been prolonged due to strong opposition over the past 19 months, was clearly on the minds of nearly every spectator in the gallery. Both sides were able to speak their thoughts to the council. Nearly half the spectators were young, concerned rowers.“I don’t think any of us arrived at this decision easily,” Councilman Hearsel Craig told the gallery after casting his vote. “The simple fact is that we would not have been here if we did not have concerned citizens.”The Friends of Duranceaux Park group has opposed the construction of the boathouse since the community found out about it in March of 2008. They are concerned about increased traffic and worry that the overall aesthetic of the park will be diminished. In a previous interview with The Lantern, Friedman said the new facility would be a “party house” for OSU.The group has asked OSU and the city of Columbus to consider building the boathouse on the east side of the river, and has been vocal at committee meetings, going as far as meeting with OSU Board of Trustees members this summer.“We’re very appreciative, it’s been a joint project,” said Ben Jay, senior associate athletics director for finance and operations. “More importantly, it will fulfill the mission for the Columbus Department of Recreation of Parks of moving youth rowing programs to a new facility.”OSU and the CDRP have both continued to emphasize the benefits to the community that the boathouse presents. The boathouse would allow OSU’s rowing team to be more competitive with other schools, they say. It would also provide Columbus more access to the river, better lighting and a public dock, said Mollie O’Donnell, planning director of CDRP, in a previous interview. The city of Columbus will also be able to rent out the main room of the facility for events, which will help balance the costs of maintaining the facility.“It’s a win-win for everyone,” Jay said. With contracts currently underway with Robertson Construction Services Inc., Jay hopes to have the project completed by next year. Win over Purdue a step in the right direction for Ohio State

OSU senior forward Sam Thompson (12) attempts a layup over Purdue defenders during a game at the Schottenstein Center on March 1. OSU won, 65-61. Credit: Mark Batke / Photo editorOhio State men’s basketball coach Thad Matta has never lost a game at home in the month of March. And he doesn’t seem to care.“We got what, one more left at home? What’s my road record, because we have one on the road before that?” Matta asked after a 65-61 comeback win over Purdue on Sunday night. The Buckeyes, despite falling behind by 12 points in the first half, polished off the comeback at home in front of 15,978 at the Schottenstein Center. The win puts OSU in a three-way tie for the fourth seed in the Big Ten Tournament, which is set to begin March 11 in Chicago. If the season was over, tiebreakers would make the Buckeyes the sixth seed in the tournament, keeping them from the double-bye rewarded to the top four teams in the conference. But with two games remaining to close out the regular season — one against Penn State on the road and the other against Wisconsin at home — Matta said he hasn’t paid any attention to where his team is seeded.“For a million dollars, I couldn’t tell you who we are in a tie with, that’s how much I follow it,” Matta said. “I’ll be honest with you, 15 years as a head coach, I’ve never thought about the conference tournament and I won’t think about it till Sunday when the season is over. My focus is on getting these guys ready to go on Wednesday night.”While Matta might not know, OSU is in a tie with the Michigan State Spartans and Iowa Hawkeyes. The Buckeyes put up  a combined 0-3 record against the two teams this season. However, Matta said coming back to beat Purdue on its home floor was a big step in the right direction heading into the home stretch.“You’ve got to find ways to win basketball games, you have to make plays, and I think guys did a good job of that,” Matta said. “We were fortunate to get back in it.”Playing a huge part in Sunday’s win was freshman guard D’Angelo Russell, who said he is excited about the way the Buckeyes are playing as they close out the regular season.“I could get used to this. This is great. Coach preached in shootaround, ‘It’s March, and it’s here,’” Russell said. “Every win counts and any win can trigger a run, and just getting this win on our home court is great going down to Penn State.”Senior forward Sam Thompson, who scored nine of his 14 points in the second half in the win over Purdue, agreed with his younger teammate.“This is the type of win we need to get, especially in the month of March,” Thompson said. “This is a step in the right direction, so we need to have a good day of practice and take care of business on Wednesday.”The Buckeyes defeated the Nittany Lions on Feb. 11 by 20 points at home, but fell in State College, Pa., last season, 65-63, marking Matta’s second loss to Penn State in his career at OSU.After the one-game road trip, the Buckeyes are set to return home for senior day and take on Wisconsin on Sunday. The Badgers currently sit at No. 5 in the country and have lost just two Big Ten games this season, against Maryland and Rutgers.Russell, who has not yet experienced March Madness, perhaps summarized the Buckeyes’ position in one sentence as he left the postgame podium.“We’re making our strides forward, and there’s no room to go backwards,” he said. read more

Stranger Things 3 hid an obscure Easter egg but someone finally found

first_img2:33 Share your voice What makes this reference so special is that Stranger Things star Winona Ryder (Joyce Byers) also starred in the comedic Tim Burton ghost movie Beetlejuice.   There is a bit of a time discrepancy here. Stranger Things season 3 is set in 1985, but Beetlejuice came out in 1988. Does that mean Mr. Clarke is a time traveler? That would be quite a twist. That list included Back to the Future, Jaws, Wonder Woman, posters, songs, Nancy Drew, shirts, Radio Shack, Mall Rats, Terminator, Evil Dead and Alien. They did confirm it was a pop culture movie reference. You can continue the search on your own if you think you have what it takes, or you can check out the answer, which was finally delivered by Twitter user Hackyzach. Hackyzach correctly identified the Easter egg as Beetlejuice’s tombstone, which was tucked into the town model created by science teacher Mr. Clarke. “Winner, winner, banana boat for dinner,” the writers declared. Ram Charan Teja and Wife Upasana Kamineni to Move to Mumbai Soon

first_imgSouthern superstar Chiranjeevi’s son Ram Charan Teja who is making his Bollywood debut as Inspector Vijay in “Zanjeer” remake is serious about his career in the Hindi film industry. The Tollywood actor, who is presently in Mumbai for the film’s shooting, is reportedly on a hunt for a home in the financial capital. The “Magadheera” star apparently took help from his mentor Salman Khan to buy a suitable place in Mumbai. After a week of searching for a house, Ram Charan has zeroed in on a property in Bandra, close to where Salman Khan lives. The house is also close to Shahrukh Khan’s house “Mannat”, which is located in the same district.Though several southern stars like Rajinikant, Kamal Hasan, Surya, R. Madhavan and Ram Charan’s father Chiranjeevi have had a share of success in Bollywood, they all went back to their respective film industry. Ram Charan, on the other hand, is thinking of establishing a parallel career in the Hindi film industry.”He is already the numero uno in Hyderabad. Ram doesn’t want Zanjeer to be a one-off blockbuster in Hindi like his dad’s Pratibandh. He wants to build a career brick by brick in Mumbai. And that means setting up a home in Mumbai,” The Times of India quoted a close friend of the actor as saying.Apart from pursing his career in Bollywood, another reason why he is hunting for a house in Mumbai is because of his wife Upasana Kamineni.Upasana Kamineni is the vice-chairman of Apollo Charity and granddaughter of Prathap C Reddy, the Managing Director of the Apollo Hospitals. Apparently, Kamineni has some hospital expansions plans in Mumbai.”Upasana and Ram want to set up a home in Mumbai from where they can pursue their respective careers. While she will work on the hospital project in Mumbai Ramcharan intends to build his Bollywood career beyond Zanjeer. He has already given the nod to another film with the Zanjeer director Apoorva Lakhia which will also star Abhishek Bachchan and is in talks with a leading corporate house in Mumbai for a lucrative 3-film deal,” the friend said. The Telugu actor confirmed the news saying that he was in Mumbai last week in search of a good property and saw three properties in and around Bandra.”I was in Mumbai last week to buy a home. I saw three properties in and around Bandra. Now I am going back to Mumbai with my wife to finalize the deal. The deal will be sealed in a week,” the actor said.last_img read more

Rumor Microsoft to possibly release a Windows 8 tablet

first_img Microsoft to release a tablet OS in 2012 While some reporters and bloggers are speculating that this may be part of Windows attempt to create an iPad killer, few are pointing out the holes in that theory. First is the fact that Windows current model of licensing out the Windows 7 operating system to third party tablet makers is relatively low risk and highly profitable for Microsoft. Few companies are willing to rock the boat on a profitable business model. The second reason that Microsoft trying to make their own iPad killer would be unlikely is that history is not on their side. Many of us remember the ill fate of the Zune, which at the time was launched as competition to the now ubiquitous iPod family of device. Then there is the Kin, a Microsoft phone, which failed to take a bite out of the iPhone popularity. It was pulled from the market after failing to sell. If Microsoft has learned it lesson about coming late to market against Apple in mobile devices, they’ll stick with their profitable licensing agreements and let their partners with stronger track records in mobile, like Motorola, try to make an iPad killer. Astronomers characterize two superEarths in a distant planetary system

first_img Citation: Astronomers characterize two ‘super-Earths’ in a distant planetary system (2017, May 16) retrieved 18 August 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2017-05-astronomers-characterize-super-earths-distant-planetary.html More information: K2-106, a system containing a metal rich planet and a planet of lower density, arXiv:1705.04163 [astro-ph.EP] arxiv.org/abs/1705.04163AbstractAims: Planets in the mass-range from 2 to 15 MEarth are very diverse. Some of them have very low, others very high densities. Method: We determined the masses, radii and the densities for the two transiting planets orbiting K2-106, which have been previously found. The inner one is an ultra-short period planet with an orbital period of 0.57 days. The outer planet has orbital period of 13.3 days. Results: The two planets have similar masses, though very different densities. For K2-106b we derive M_p=7.69+/-0.82 MEarth, Rp=1.52+/-0.16 REarth, and a high density of 12.0 -3.2+4.8 gcm-3. For K2-106c, we find 6.79+/-2.29 MEarth, R_p=2.59+/-0.27 REarth and a relatively low density of 2.4-1.1+1.6 gcm-3. Conclusions: Since the systems contains two planets of almost the same mass, but different distances from the host star, it is an excellent laboratory to study atmospheric escape. Comparing the mass and radius of the inner planet with composition models implies that it has an iron core containing at least 50% of its mass. Such a high metal content is surprising, particularly given that the star has solar abundance. We discuss various formation scenarios for this unusual planet. Best-fit light curves to planet K2-106 b. Light curve is folded to the orbital period of the planet. Credit: Guenther et al., 2017. Located approximately 825 light years away from the Earth, K2-106 is a 5 billion-year-old star of spectral type G5. With a radius of about 0.83 solar radii, the star is 7 percent less massive than the sun. In 2016, researchers detected two planets transiting this star with orbital periods of 0.57 and 13.3 days. Now, Guenther’s team obtained absolute and relative radial velocity measurements of K2-106 using five different spectrographs worldwide in order to reveal more detailed information about this planetary system. The new observations show that the two exoplanets have almost the same mass, but orbit at different distances from the host, which makes the system an excellent laboratory to study atmospheric escape processes.”We determined the masses, radii and the densities for the two transiting planets orbiting K2-106, which have been previously found,” the paper reads. The researchers found that the planet closest to the star—K2-106 b—has a radius of about 1.52 Earth radii and is about 7.7 times more massive. Therefore, it has a high density of approximately 12 g cm-3.K2-106 c is bigger in size as its radius is about 2.6 Earth radii. However, the planet is less massive—6.8 Earth masses—which gives a relatively low density of 2.4 g cm-3.The team also revealed new information about the composition of K2-106 b. They assume that it is a metal-rich planet with an iron core containing at least 50 percent of its mass.”Ultra-short-period planets forming close to the star should all be iron-rich. Clearly, more research in this field is needed, but the results so far obtained show that studies of ultra-short period planets can give us key information on how and where low-mass planets form. The high metal content of the planet is thus very interesting, particularly because the host star has solar metallicity,” the authors wrote in the paper. The researchers noted that the K2-106 is particularly interesting because it hosts an ultra-short period planet subject to a strong stellar irradiation and an outer planet at a relatively large distance from the host star, where the atmospheric escape rate is expected to be low. Thus this system could provide important insights into the formation and evolution of planets. However, many observations are still needed to uncover more details about K2-106 and its planets.”K2-106 is a very interesting system that deserves further studies. (…) The next logical steps are search for the extended, escaping exosphere atmosphere of K2-106 b that has been suggest by Mura (et al. 2011) by obtaining spectroscopic transit observations in a similar way as we have done for CoRoT-7b (Guenther et al. 2011),” the astronomers concluded. Explore further ‘Hot Jupiter’ transiting a rapidly-rotating star discovered © 2017 Phys.org (Phys.org)—An international team of astronomers led by Eike W. Guenther of the Thuringian State Observatory in Tautenburg, Germany, has characterized two “super-Earth” exoplanets orbiting a distant star designated K2-106, determining their size, mass and density. The new findings were presented in a paper published May 11 on the arXiv pre-print server. This document is subject to copyright.
