am Xiaomi Redmi 4 is priced starting at Rs 6999 for the base variant and here’s our first impression Related News Redmi Note 4 Redmi 4A and now Redmi 4 Well this is Xiaomi’s strategy for India at least if you go by 2017 launches The new Redmi 4 as the company says is the successor the Redmi 3S Redmi 3S Prime series but this one has a lot more versions compared to the previous one Xiaomi’s Redmi 4 comes in three variants in India Redmi 4 with 2GB RAM +16GB storage at Rs 6999 the Redmi 4 with 3GB RAM+32GB storage at Rs 8999 and finally Redmi 4 with 4GB RAM+64GB storage at Rs 10999 Xiaomi has taken one step further by introducing a 64GB storage variant for its budget smartphone Redmi 4 now comes in a matte black variant similar to the Redmi Note 4 and there’s a gold colour variant as well We got the Redmi 4 with 3GB RAM and 32GB storage and here’s our detailed first impression of the device Design Display Redmi 4 is like a mini version of the Redmi Note 4 This phone sports a metal unibody design similar to the Redmi Note 4 series except this one has a 5-inch HD display compared to the former’s 55-inch full HD one The dual CNC-drilled speakers are now at the bottom of the device and in the middle is the micro-USB port It has a slightly curved back with antenna bands running on top and the bottom; the headphone jack is on top of the phone Redmi 4 is a mini-version of Redmi Note 4 in terms of design Overall the 5-inch form factor makes this a very compact device to hold However the Redmi 4 is prone to picking up smudges especially on the back So get a cover and tempered glass for the front as well to avoid screen disasters For those who like a 5-inch phone the Redmi 4 remains a good-looking option to consider Redmi 4 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 435 processor On the display front this one sports a 5-inch HD display which works well in all lighting conditions even bright sunlight For a budget phone this is one of the better displays you can get in the market Specifications Performance I’ve been using the Redmi 4 for the past couple of days and so far I wouldn’t say general performance is an issue The phone is powered by a Qualcomm octa-core Snapdragon 435 processor and has 3GB RAM + 32GB storage which can be expanded via a microSD card For your daily social media consumption be it YouTube or Facebook or daily messaging this phone is good enough It performs the basic tasks without any hiccups However Redmi 4 is not ideal for graphics heavy games like Asphalt 8 and there is a noticeable lag at times But remember this is a budget phone The phone does tend to get warm towards the top when you’re gaming for too long but nothing unbearable Navigating between apps is not an issue Redmi 4 has dual speakers at the bottom Camera Redmi 4 comes with a 13MP rear camera and a 5MP front camera The front camera is acceptable I would say though the software kept tagging me as a 44-year-old male which is not very flattering The rear camera is not the fastest and while colours like red appear a bit washed out the overall picture composition is not so bad Photos take time to render in HDR mode but the final results are quite nice Sample shots from Redmi 4 Sample shots from Redmi 4 Overall I would say the camera is pretty standard on the Redmi 4 and delivers a good experience given the price of the phone On the low-light shots I still have to test out this phone some more Battery Xiaomi has made this the USP of the Redmi series Redmi 4 has a 4100 mAh battery which will easily last a day However there is no fast-charging and the phone takes a good three hours plus to get to 100 per cent But even if you charge this phone at 50 per cent you should be able to get more than a day with moderate to heavy usage Redmi 4 has a 4100 mAh battery Final thoughts With Redmi 3S Redmi 3S Prime Xiaomi claims to have sold 4 million units over the last nine months Redmi 4 will try and build on that success Plus the company has expanded its distribution channels which will likely boost sales For now Redmi 4 looks like a very capable phone offering solid specifications and a sturdy performance at a budget For all the latest Technology in the consultative process Related News Telecom major Vodafone India today told the Delhi High Court that TRAI’s consultation process to frame rules for network testing before a full-fledged launch by a company was a “deliberate exercise” to defeat its plea against Reliance Jio (RJIO) Vodafone contended before Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva that the consultation process initiated by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) appeared to be to find answers to the issues raised by it in the petition in the high court The telecom major in its plea had alleged violation of tariff orders by RJIO by offering free voice calls The TRAI on the other hand said that Vodafone should participate in the consultative process for which the last date for seeking comments is May 29 and for counter-comments it was June 12 The court meanwhile said what the TRAI does is not binding on it and listed Vodafone’s applications challenging the consultation process and seeking an early hearing for further consideration on May 15 when the main petition of the company is scheduled to be taken up In the consultation paper the regulator has also sought views on a host of other issues including whether a telecom operator should be allowed to enroll subscribers as test users restrictions on their numbers period of use for trial service criteria to differentiate test phase from commercial launch and the like Also Read:Vodafone to offer 28GB data with unlimited calling at Rs 346 offer valid until March 15 Jio free trials of 4G services stretched from December 28 2015 to September 4 2016 The company had over 15 lakh users on its network before the commercial launch on September 5 last year Vodafone in its petition has claimed that by providing the free voice calls and continuing to do so as a promotional offer beyond a period of 90 days RJIO was violating norms and the TRAI’s tariff orders and regulations It said it was also aggrieved by the TRAI’s stand of allowing the alleged violation to continue RJIO had earlier told the court that the TRAI has held its free offers to subscribers as perfectly legitimate For all the latest Technology News download Indian Express App More Related News Reports from Western nations have suggested that mobile phones are more often dirtier than toilet seats with some smart phones even known to harbour deadly drug resistant bacteria The startling finding is by scientists of the government-owned National Centre for Cell Science (NCCS) here who have been able to identify three new species of microbes from screens of mobile phones Watch all our videos from Express Technology Two bacteria and fungus never before reported in scientific literature were identified by this laboratory funded by the Department of Biotechnology Earlier a study done in 2015 by William DePaolo an assistant professor in the Molecular Microbiology and Immunology Department at the University of Southern California found that toilet seats usually contained three different types of bacteria but mobile phones on an average housed some 10-12 different types of fungi and bacteria Mobile phones since they are carried in almost all human environments from the kitchen to the public transport harbour a larger diversity of micro-organisms These microbes grow well on the sweat and grime left on the phones as humans carry them around In Pune Yogesh S Shouche and his team from the Microbial Culture Collection group of the NCCS collected samples from 27 mobile phone screens and they were able to isolate 515 different bacterial types and 28 different fungi These microbes are friendly to humans and usually thrive on our bodies says Praveen Rahi a co-investigator for the work The team used sterilised cotton swabs and sterile saline solution to wipe from the surface these microbes which were then grown using standardised culture media at 30 degrees centigrade But what surprised this six-member team was that they encountered three new species of organisms — two bacteria they have named Lysinbacillus telephonicus and Microbacterium telephonicum and a new species of fungi that they named Pyrenochaeta telephoni There is some good news Rahi emphasises “In the samples they collected none of the highly dangerously pathogenic microbes like Staphylococcus aureus the most common multi-drug resistant super bug Yet he emphasises they did not actively sample smart phones used by health care workers where these super-bugs usually reside This Pune finding on the hygiene of mobile phones suggests that the situation is not as bad in India even though in this nation of 13 billion people there are more mobile phones than toilets On the other hand a 2015 study from Alexandria in Egypt where more than half of the 40 samples collected from doctors at the university hospital harboured the super bugs Also Read:Marvel microbes may explain how complex life evolved This week the World Health Organisation (WHO) gave out an alarming finding that 12 families of microbes were winning the war against anti-biotics and humanity urgently needed to discover new chemicals to kill these super bugs The WHO said “antibiotic resistance is growing and we are fast running out of treatment options” The simplest way to keep mobile phones clean and hygienic is not to carry them to toilets and to occasionally wipe them with semi-dry piece of cloth moistened with soap water and then fully drying the handset before putting it to use It is recommended that commercial cleaning fluids and sanitiser should not be used and that the mobile device should be switched off before any cleaning is attempted The NCCS group is known for their varied expertise on microbes as they house under one roof some 200000 different microbe cultures making it possibly the world’s single largest microbe culture collection As they say mobile phones are literally mushrooming with India alone being home to some 900 million handsets yet who ever imagined that new species of organisms would be discovered from this twenty first century electronic marvel The ubiquitous mobile phone is now a new haven for microbes For all the latest Technology News download
