first_img 161 Views   no discussions Share CoronavirusHealthLifestyleLocalNews Smoking, Drinking to Cope “Likely to Have Opposite Effect” by: – April 7, 2020 Smokers, drinkers and drug users are being advised that this is the best time to drop those vices,The Hon Health Minister, Dr Irving McIntyre says even those consumers who use substances and alcohol to cope with the stress and anxiety of the global crisis are not making the best decisions.“Given the nature of COVID19 in that it attaches the lungs and upper respiratory tract, this virus can be a serious threat those who smoke or vape,” Dr McIntyre said.He says alcohol as a coping mechanism , “is likely to have the opposite effect” and could reduce the ability of the immune system to cope.Dr McIntyre repeated the call to bartenders to adhere to the order against opening bars and  selling alcohol.He instead recommended other activities like conversation, online classes, virtual events, preparing family emergency plans, gardening, telecommunicating to deal with negative emotions.
