This country needs to know who are the intellectual authors of what transpired here. I look forward to an independent inquiry that is not directed by political influences,” he added.Social Cohesion Minister Dr George Norton highlighted the resilience of residents of the Lusignan community. In an expression of sympathy, the minister stated, “Overcoming pain is one thing, but living or coping with pain is another thing. That you continue to do, (and) for this I admire you.”The memorial concluded with prayers from the three major religions in the country.RecapIn the wee hours of January 26, 2008, gunmen armed with rifles and shotguns invaded five homes and killed almost all of their occupants. Norwich boss Farke on Man City upset: Courage, amazing spiritby Paul Vegasa month agoSend to a friendShare the loveNorwich City boss Daniel Farke hailed his stand-ins for their shock victory over Manchester City.City’s long injury list meant Farke was forced into several changes, but his players did him proud.“It was a debut in the starting line-up for Sam Byram, a debut in the starting line-up for Ibrahim Amadou in a position that isn’t his natural one, and a first game for Alex Tettey,” said Farke. “It was difficult but we had to deliver against perhaps the best team in the world, and we did it in our style. We totally believe we are capable of reaching something extraordinary today, and we showed amazing spirit.“We have a lot of long-term injuries so it will be difficult. So we need this spirit and attitude because there will be setbacks and difficult moments and that’s when we will need our togetherness, and to remember moments like today.“Each and every game will be different, with teams with different styles and quality, but we have to take out of this game that if you stick together you always have a chance. Even if no one bets on you, with bravery and commitment and togetherness you can go far.”The boss also had a word for the City fans, who created an incredible atmosphere for the entire 90 minutes.“Carrow Road was an explosion and we needed this,” he said. “Without our fans, and their help to bring us over the line, we wouldn’t have had a chance to win today. We needed this unity from the fans, and big compliments to our supporters – they were crucial for our win.” About the authorPaul VegasShare the loveHave your say

Senior guard Lenzelle Smith Jr. (32) flies to the hoop for a score during a game against Bryant Dec. 11 at the Schottenstein Center. OSU won, 86-48. Credit: Shelby Lum / Photo editorIf the Ohio State Buckeyes felt any added pressure to recently becoming one of the top-ranked teams in the country, they certainly did not show it against Bryant University. The No. 3 Buckeyes (9-0, 0-0), led by a stellar effort from senior guard Lenzelle Smith Jr., dominated Bryant (6-5, 0-0) from start to finish, winning 86-48 Wednesday at the Schottenstein Center.“That was one of the things we talked about in shootaround and really coming out of the Central Connecticut State game. Trying to sustain intensity, trying to sustain effort, keep the focus on the things we need to get better at,” OSU coach Thad Matta said after the win. “I thought we did a pretty decent job with that.”Smith Jr. opened the contest by swooping to the hoop for a score on the game’s first possession, and he — and his team — never looked back.Solid ball movement, timely shooting and an advantage in size against the Bulldogs allowed OSU to shoot 53.6 percent from the field in the first half, as Smith Jr. scored 12 points in the opening 20 minutes to help his team to a 43-23 lead at the break.“As a senior, I put a lot of work into my game offensively over the summer and my confidence is off the chart,” Smith Jr. said after the win. “My teammates are able to find me wide open. A lot of teams, for some reason, teams are helping off of me and I’m able to get great looks at the basket.”Matta said he thinks the senior is “playing at a very, very high level” so far this season.“He’s a really good demeanor about him in terms of being a senior and knowing that this is kind of (his) last crack at it,” Matta said. “I love the way he’s playing right now … the fact that he’s shooting the ball the way he is makes us a better basketball team.”Each of the 10 players who saw action Wednesday night scored, as Smith Jr. and junior center Amir Williams led the way with 19 and 12 points, respectively. The Buckeyes finished shooting 52.5 percent for the game, including 40 percent from three.“We’re making great finds, we’re reading each other, we have great guards on the perimeter,” Smith Jr. said about the offensive output. “We’re able to attack the defense on every side and penetrate and kick the ball out. Our offensive shooting has increased over these past three or four games. We just want to keep rolling.”Bryant coach Tim O’Shea was not short of good things to say about OSU after the game, stating that the Buckeye team has the potential to contend for the national title.“We’re a good team, we’re going to contend for a championship in our league. They’re going to contend for a national championship,” O’Shea said. “Just athletically, they’re an extraordinary bunch … This is the best of the best. There are few teams in the country that’ll contend for the national championship legitimately and Ohio State is one of them.”The final player to enter the game for the Buckeyes was junior forward Jake Lorbach, a walk-on who hit all three shots he took from the field, punctuated by a breakaway dunk that brought a multitude of cheers from his teammates on the bench.“He works on those moves all the time in practice so we weren’t surprised when he made those shots,” junior center Amir Williams said about Lorbach after the game, then raising his hand jokingly after he and Smith Jr. were asked if they were worried about losing their starting spots. “He did look good. I got to take lessons from him from now on.”Even Matta was impressed with Lorbach’s efforts.“I’m happy for Jake, the ball went in for him. He’s been in this program now for a year and a half. Every single day he comes in, he works. Those moves that he made, he’s working them every single day,” Matta said. “That is exciting for him and it’s exciting for the guys because they know how hard he works.”From the starting five all the way to the end of the bench, the Buckeyes took care of business Wednesday.“For our guys, they had great respect for Bryant and knowing the caliber of basketball team they are. I thought we did a good job of sticking with the focus that we needed to,” Matta said.OSU is next scheduled to take on North Dakota State Saturday at 8:15 p.m. at the Schottenstein Center.
England boss Gareth Southgate has decided to stick with the positives, despite Saturday’s defeat against Spain at Wembley. The Three Lions’ raced to an early lead thanks to Marcus Rashford’s sublime finish, but goals from Saul Niguez and Rodrigo secured victory for Spain“It was a really tough game,” said Southgate.“They are a top, top side and I think for spells kept the ball incredibly well, pressed us and we didn’t keep the ball in the early part of the game well enough.“But I’ve got to give the players enormous credit because it was a game where we could’ve folded and disappeared but we didn’t.“We hung in there, and in the last 25 or 30 minutes we really came into the game, kept the ball a lot better and created some good chances and could well have got a draw out of it.Quiz: How much do you know about David Villa? Boro Tanchev – September 14, 2019 Time to test your knowledge about Spanish legendary forward David Villa.“We’re under no illusions that Spain were the better team for long periods of that but they are brilliant at what they do, and we are in the early stages of what we’re trying to do.“They pressed extremely well, and it took us a while to work out where that press was coming from and find a solution to it. We did it a couple of times, but at the moment we’re still finding our feet in playing out from those areas.“Now we have a choice. We can either go back to our old style, and we’ll never be a top team, or we can keep trying to do what we do and suffer at times.“We have got some players who can do it, others who are improving at it and for me, it’s the way I believe we should play.“It takes time. We’ve come a long way in a short space of time and today was as tough a test as you could have against a team that presses like that and are so good in possession.“I think at the moment we have to stick with the plan, stick with what we’re doing and just get better at doing it.”
W3C, the standards-setting body for the Internet (World Wide Web Consortium), has completed a draft for the important VoiceXML 3.0 – technology enabling voice identification verification. While normally associated with voice commands, it has the potential to greatly speed and improve the accuracy and positive proof of online transactions. Name that voice: Mathematica catches impersonations Explore further Some larger net businesses are even using it to confirm orders and verify identity. Many, however, have become increasingly worried about the reliability and security of these transactions with fraud and identity theft on the rise. Error rates have been around 1 to 2% – unacceptable for ironclad business transactions.W3C does not actually make software but produces standards. They now have a working draft, said James Larson, co-chair of the W3C VBWG – Voice Browser Working Group. The standard also addressed the issue of extending its Speech Synthesis Markup Language (SSML) functionality to certain languages including Mandarin Chinese, Japanese and Korean. SSML is important because it allows software makers to control speech from pitch to volume to pronunciation. This insures the software will hear the right tones and pitches so critical in languages were a tiny change in pronunciation can affect the whole meaning of a word.SSML is also used to tag areas of speech with different regional pronunciations. It is based on JSpeech Grammar Format (JSGF).A technical description and how to use SSML version 1 on a web page can be found here: www.xml.com/pub/a/2004/10/20/ssml.htmlMicrosoft Agent website is another source for would be speech interface developers.www.microsoft.com/MSAGENT/downloads/user.aspOpera browsers can be programmed for speech recognition with some XHTML (Extended Hypertext Markup Language) extensions. my.opera.com/community/dev/voice/Working with web-based speech applications can be frustrating. While the speech recognition software works well, poor quality microphones and PC speakers combined with slower Internet connections can put a damper on effectiveness. These issues will be difficult to address due to being largely beyond the control of the developer. New speech compression algorithms and simple responses like yes or no make the job much easier.Trained systems – ones that are accustomed to the user’s voice – have been much more successful, but users typically do not have the patience to complete the training and the time factor makes it impractical. Expect to find the first complex VoiceXML 3.0 technology mostly in telephone-connected and cell-phone activated systems – ones that have more controllable voice quality.Hopefully, with the new W3C standards, companies can dedicate more to useful speech recognition and less to reinventing the wheel. Standards usually lead to software tool kits for programmers and these often end up in popular packages like Microsoft’s Frontpage and Adobe’s Macromedia Dreamweaver.Amateur and professional web designers alike may soon find a compelling reason to upgrade to voice enabled web design suites.Maybe one day you can toss that pesky keyboard and mouse and talk to your machine instead – a promise made since the late 1980s and not yet satisfactorily realized.by Philip Dunn, Copyright 2005 PhysOrg.com
